The Benefits of an Automatic Gate Opener

Few people consider a gate opener when installing their fence, but it’s convenient and practical. An automatic gate opener is equally applicable for those in the country and city dwellers.

Enhanced Security & Safety

The property owner is in control of who enters, providing an elevated level of safety. It’s an effective way to reduce theft, vandalism and shrinkage for business owners and an alarm system can be combined with the gate opener for home or business safety. An automatic opener can be especially beneficial for homes with children and pets, or that raise prize livestock.

Perimeter Control

This is especially important for those that have large yards or tracts of land, along with businesses that handle sensitive documents or certain types of products. Owners know exactly who is on the premises at all times and the gate openers can be combined with card readers, pass codes or biometric readers.

More Privacy

Since fences are typically set back from structures, an automatic gate opener gives homes and businesses an added level of privacy. It prevents anyone from getting too close to the home or business before owners know who is approaching. The distance involved from the gate to the home or business is also beneficial for preventing the prying eyes of neighbors or would be intruders.

Value and Curb Appeal

There’s something intrinsically appealing about a fence with an automatic gate opener and that works to the owner’s benefit if they’re selling the property. Potential buyers see a valuable feature that they don’t have to install themselves. The openers can be combined with any type of security or decorative privacy fencing for added curb appeal.

Convenience

Nothing can compare with the convenience of an automatic gate opener. It means people don’t have to leave their vehicle during inclement weather to lock and unlock a gate. It also means parents don’t have to leave their children in a running vehicle while they unlock the premises. Gates can be equipped with opener models that contain sensors and will close automatically after a vehicle has passed through.

Best Way to Determine Gate Type

Many people are so caught up in the excitement of their new fence they forget the finishing touch – the gate. Fences are designed to keep things in or out and a gate is essential for a fence to accomplish its purpose. Individuals will obviously want a gate that’s complementary to their fence. There are multiple concerns to consider when choosing a gate.

Material

A gate will typically be constructed of the same material as the fence. It provides continuity, strength and durability.

Children and Pets

Consider the closing mechanism of the gate carefully and its positioning. It should be out of easy reach of children to prevent them from wandering out of the yard or into traffic. Canines can and do learn how to circumvent and open locked gates. That holds true whether the gate is manually operated or utilizes keypads, video access or electronic locks.

Space

Fence gates swing inward to permit passage of vehicles in and out. There may not be enough room for the gate to swing back far enough due to plantings or other obstacles. A gate that slides to the side may be a better option. If an electric gate is planned, it will require electrical work to ensure access to a power source.

The width of the gate should comfortably accommodate the size of the vehicles that will arrive and depart, along with any trailers used to transport recreational vehicles. If any home improvement projects are planned, individuals will need to consider the size of those vehicles.

Single or Double

Individuals can choose a one-piece gate or a double gate that contains two separate panels. There’s typically less stress placed on the hinges of a single hung gate.

Designs

Gates can be as plain or ornate as desired. Individuals can have a custom gate created that features their family crest, company logo, or initials. Some are even unique works of art in their own right. Just make sure the personalization doesn’t compromise the security of the gate.

Why Install a Gate Alarm

A gate alarm is required for pool safety, but many overlook the value of an alarm for the gate to the fencing surrounding their property. An alarm is a critical element of fencing, particularly if children or pets are involved. Gate alarms also add value to properties.

There are multiple types of gate alarms available that can be installed independently and don’t require a full-fledged security system. Models are available that sound an alarm outside, inside, and have a one-touch bypass button for adults to allow authorized individuals to enter. Many can be operated via a mobile device and allow for a security code to be entered.

Children

Youngsters are naturally curious about the world around them and few things are more tempting than things they can’t reach outside the safety of their fenced in area. If a child can reach the lock on the gate, there’s every expectation that they’ll find a way to trip it. Youngsters can easily run into the street and even be kidnapped. An alarm is an essential tool for warning parents and caregivers if the gate has been opened.

Pets

Many people don’t give dogs sufficient credit for their ability to manipulate gates and locks. A canine that escapes their fence can be hit by passing traffic. There’s no guarantee a good Samaritan will find them and take them to a shelter and “stray” dogs are often picked up and used as bait in dog fighting operations. Gate alarms are also beneficial for protecting the public from guard dogs.

Unwanted Guests

For those that don’t want to deal with door-to-door salespeople, church representatives, or gatecrashers, a fence alarm is a great way to avoid them. The alarm will give individuals enough warning to head unwanted guests off and discourage interaction before they reach the home.

Intruders

Those that mean harm or intend to burgle a home won’t bother with scaling a fence if there’s a gate. Entering through a gate projects the perception that that interloper has a right to be there. An alarm alerts individuals when the gate has been breached, providing an opportunity to notify police.

Decorative Gate and Fence Designs

Individuals are no longer limited to standard fence designs or the gates that go with them. Fencing companies offer decorative fences and unique gates to accommodate an extensive range of tastes.

Fence Options

Fencing can be erected in vertical and horizontal designs and multiple types of materials can be combined. Different types of complementary fencing can be used on the same property and at different heights. Wood is being combined with metal and even frosted aluminum panels to create a unique appearance.

Post caps for fencing come in an extensive array of designs. Lighted elements are becoming more popular in fence design, especially those that operate with solar power, to save money and create ambiance for outdoor gatherings.

Individuals can select from materials ranging from wood, aluminum, PVC and SimTek®. Archways are an elegant way to highlight fencing entryways. Bamboo is a sustainably sourced material that’s gaining traction as a fencing material and it’s offered in multiple colors. For those that want a fence, but want the light to shine in, can choose lattice work. It’s aesthetically pleasing and enables individuals to plant vines or other types of plants for privacy and beauty.

Wood or metal fencing can be paired with stone pillars for a truly unique look. An increasing number of people are choosing to dress up their fencing with wood or metal decorations that can be changed according to the season if desired. Flower boxes are an easy way to add interest to a fence, but make sure the fence is properly designed to hold the weight.

Gate Choices

No fence is complete without a gate and individuals can choose from gates with scalloped edges and lightweight aluminum with filigreed elements. Gates are available in single and double styles. Dressing up gates with hand-carved elements are increasing in popularity, depicting everything from animals and woodland scenes to elaborate geometric designs and the owner’s initials.

Aluminum gates emulating wrought iron are highly durable and can be customized in many ways. The gates are being adorned with inlays of faux jewels and carved fantasy items such as unicorns and dragons, along with butterflies, exotic animals and birds, and even dinosaurs.

What to Consider Before Installing a Gate

A gate can be the crowning touch for your fence. A sturdy gate can deter intruders, burglars, keep children and pets in, while preventing unwanted people and wildlife from entering. Installing a gate isn’t a simple matter of creating a barrier. There are multiple concerns that individuals should consider before a gate is installed.

Permits and Regulations

Many cities and municipalities require a permit to install a gate on an already existing fence. The installation of a gate is typically covered under a permit to erect a new fence. Consulting with a fencing professional is critical as they will be cognizant of local regulations. Some communities also have height limits on gates.

Width

The width of the gate will be a critical consideration. Gates wide enough to fit most passenger cars and trucks won’t be sufficient for larger model vehicles. The width may not accommodate delivery vehicles, many types of trailers, or even some types of equipment for lawn care or home renovations.

The space for the gate will need to be slightly larger than the driveway entrance. Additionally, the wider the gate span is, the more likely it will be to eventually sag. Heavy-duty hinges and some type of bracing – either decorative or utilitarian – will be needed for single swinging gates.

Single, Double or Sliding

Individuals have the option of a single gate hinged on one side or a gate with two panels, both of which swing open and closed independent of the other. A sliding gate is an excellent solution for smaller entrances – as long as there’s sufficient space for the door to slide back with no impediments such as trees, flowerbeds or decorative hard features.

Latches, Locks and Automation

For those with young children and large dogs, it’s essential that latches, locks and opening mechanisms be above their reach. It’s especially important if automated gates are installed or if individuals live near busy highways.

Equally important, the mechanisms should also be out of reach and inaccessible from people on the outside of the gate. Access control can be incorporated to screen individuals through video intercoms before they enter the property for an additional level of safety and security.

Florida Fence Laws When You Have a Pool

Every family waits with eager anticipation the installation of their new pool. However, before taking the first dip in your new pool, there are fencing laws to which you must adhere under the Residential Swimming Pool Safety Act. Failure to do so has stiff penalties.

Enacted in 2009, the law is designed to reduce the number of accidental drowning of children. Prior to passage of the law, drowning was the No. 1 cause of accidental death in children of all ages. Now pool owners are required by law to erect a barrier around their pool that adheres to stringent specifications.

Swimming Pools

Outdoor swimming pools are required to be encircled by a fence or other suitable barrier of at least 4 feet in height. It must be low enough to the ground so children can’t crawl under it and include no outcroppings that small children can use to crawl over it.

The fence is required to be a specified distance from the edge of the pool in the event that a child manages to infiltrate the barrier to prevent them from immediately falling in the water. The fence must have a gate that opens outward, be self-closing, and be equipped with a self-locking device.

Indoor Pools

There are some exceptions for indoor pools. If the pool is inside a screened in area, a fence isn’t required as long as the windows and doors that give access to the pool have a wired safety alarm. A fence also isn’t required if there’s a self-closing, self-latching device installed at least 54 inches above ground level.

Kiddie Pools

Small, shallow wading pools are popular for younger children at home. They’re designed to be temporary in nature and aren’t subject to fencing laws. Private community pools and public pools located in condos and apartment complexes are also exempt from the fencing law, but also have more rigorous laws to ensure the safety of children around water. Public swimming pools must be in compliance with the Virginia Graeme Baker Federal Pool and Sap Safety Act.

Preventing Your Fence Gate from Sagging

A sagging gate is almost inevitable at some point, simply due to its construction and the way it attaches to a fence. Even a gate that’s been installed by highly skilled professionals can sag over time. Gates are square or rectangular in shape, a framework that’s essentially unstable when fastened to a fence. They’re attached by one side and the weight of the gate makes it droopy and saggy.

A brace run diagonally from one side of the gate to the other is the easiest way to prevent it from sagging. It helps balance the tension on the gate. Other forces also come into play when a gate sags. The mere opening and closing of the barrier accelerates the process over time by loosening hardware that attaches it to the fence.

Excess Weight

A gate presents an almost irresistible temptation to children. Riding the gate while it travels back and forth is a fun game, but it places excess weight on the gate, along with the wear and tear of it opening and closing. That’s just one of the reasons why the gate lock should be placed in a position where children can’t reach it.

Another factor in gate sagging is the size of the post to which it’s attached. The post has to correlate to the size and weight of the fence. A post that’s too small allows the gate to sag because there’s too much weight for the post to adequately hold. A gate post must also be set sufficiently deep to support it and the weight of the gate.

Hindges

The choice of hinges on the gate will also determine the potential for sagging. Just as the gate post is crucial, so are the hinges and screws that are used. The entire weight of the gate rests upon and pivots on the hinge. The hinge must be able to hold the gate, its weight, and withstand multiple openings and closings. Screws must be sunk deep enough in the metal or wood to hold without pulling out of the barrier is to withstand the wear and tear of time.

5 Reasons Your Fence Gate Should have a Lock

Most homeowners know the value of including a gate in their fence installation, but many people overlook the benefits of a lock. They assume that the mere presence of a gate will deter untoward actions. Whether you choose a manually operated or convenient electronic option, every fence gate should have a lock.

  1. Safety

Your fence gate provides completion of a solid enclosure where children and pets can play in safety. Without a lock, anyone can enter the property at will by simply pushing open the gate. Children can do the same. Be sure to install locks above the reach of children and pets. Canines have been known to learn how to operate manual locks.

  1. Theft Protection

You may have expensive vehicles, outdoor furnishings, lawn equipment and other assets that you’ve worked hard to acquire. Without a gate lock, anyone from your neighbor to a thief can come in and make off with your valuables.

  1. Liability

If you’ve never discovered that someone has entered your property to enjoy the amenities, consider yourself lucky. There are an increasing number of people that pay no attention to boundaries. They think nothing of slipping onto your property to use your pool, spa, hot tub, or trampoline. In the course of their marauding, they can injure themselves on toys or tools left in the yard. Depending upon the exact circumstances, your homeowner’s insurance may not cover the costs of any damage or injuries an intruder sustains. You could be liable for the expenses.

  1. Insurance Requirements

You probably have items in your yard with the potential to cause an injury or that would be expensive to replace. Good examples are pools and spas and the chemicals to maintain them, treehouses, ziplines, swing sets, trampolines and even ordinary outdoor grills. Installing a strong gate lock can be a requirement of your homeowner’s policy.

  1. Deterrent

A fence will discourage most people from unauthorized entry, but others will assume you’re hiding something valuable. A securely locked fence gate is a powerful deterrent to would-be intruders. Few individuals will want to take the time to scale your fence if they can’t gain entry through the gate.

Fence and Gate Safety

A fence is an excellent way to ensure the safety of children and pets, keep stray animals and wildlife out, and discourage would-be intruders. One of the keys to safety and security is the proper gate, but the installation of a gate also comes with the need for gate safety. Gates can be installed that use a traditional key, swipe card, remote control or touchpad.

A gate needs to be locked if it’s to perform its function of keeping people and wildlife out while maintaining safe boundaries for children and pets. However, care must be taken to ensure young children can’t reach the locking mechanism or have access to the key. That consideration is even more important if the fence surrounds a swimming pool.

It’s essential that individuals always make sure the gate is securely closed, locked, and that older children understand the importance of maintaining gate safety. Even the most high-tech fence and gate won’t keep people or pets in and intruders out if it’s not closed and locked. One solution is automatically locking gates.

Gates should be installed at the same height as the fencing to ensure they perform the function for which they were designed. A gate that’s too short or tall will also mar the aesthetics of the fence and home.

Always install a lock on the inside of the gate that can’t be accessed from outside. It will need to be high enough that children can’t reach it or climb up for access. Another consideration are pets. Depending upon the type of lock involved, large dogs can accidentally open some types of gates if they jump up – and don’t ever assume that the family pet can’t learn how to open a gate.

A gate and lock are essential elements for any fence to ensure safety. Self-closing and latching gates are great for fencing around the entire yard. They’re critical if the fence surrounds a swimming pool. Gate safety should never be taken for granted.

Gate Size Matters

Size really does matter – especially when it comes to the gate on a fence. Most people assume that a gate should simply be as large as the driveway, but there are a myriad of other factors to consider. It may seem like a simple decision, but it’s not. A professional fencing company can help with determining the appropriate size.

The primary problem with gates is that many individuals think a smaller gate provides better privacy or security, only to discover that they can barely get their car through the entryway. That doesn’t even count large mowers, boats, campers, and other types of recreational vehicles.

Common gate sizes range from 10 to 16 feet and custom sizes are available. Ordinarily, a gate should be a few inches wider than the driveway. However, that will need to be altered if a homeowner has a very small driveway or owns a large pickup truck, one with dual wheels, or a wide variety of large equipment, trailers, or RVs.

Smaller gates will cost less and be less expensive to maintain. Single and double gates are available, but a double gate will require additional room to swing open to its widest point.  Gates should always swing inward toward the property rather than outward toward traffic and sidewalks. Sliding gates are also an option and are particularly effective for those with commercial properties or large vehicles.

Even if homeowners don’t currently own an RV, boat or other vehicle, it’s a future consideration for which they should plan. As families change over the years, so do the vehicles they purchase and the recreational options they may choose.

Something else for homeowners to consider is any restrictions on height, width or style. Homeowners associations often enact restrictions. Communities may have their own guidelines. That’s why it’s a good idea to hire a professional fencing company rather than attempting a DIY project. The company will be cognizant of local regulations, be able to obtain all the required permits, and help clients select the right size gate for their fencing needs.
