Best Way to Hurricane Proof a Fence

Fences in South Florida take a lot of abuse. Heat, humidity, insects, and even salt spray can be
detrimental to the structures. However, the real test of a fence’s sturdiness and longevity
comes with the arrival of a hurricane. There are some measures that anyone can take to help
hurricane proof their fence and give it a better chance of surviving a hurricane’s fury.
Hardware
Fencing is typically connected with nails, screws or nuts and bolts. Galvanized hardware is
resistant to rust and corrosion, but not impervious. Inspect fences regularly and have any
fasteners or joiners replaced that are loose, missing, or corroded.
Pickets and Posts
Fence posts are typically fixed in concrete for stability. Make sure any installer sets fence
uprights in concrete. Promptly replace any pickets that become damaged or loose. Another
thing to look for are any posts or pickets that may have become rotted, chipped, cracked,
warped, or the victim of insect predation.
Materials
Some types of materials are more resistant to damage than others. Materials such as vinyl are
more resistant to rain, wind and UV rays than wood, for instance. Wood fences can be blown
over in high winds.
Steel Frame
One of the best ways to hurricane proof any fence is by installing it with a framework of metal
posts. Metal is more resistant to the high winds that accompany a hurricane.
Spacing
Any fence with spaces between the pickets is going to be more resistant to the winds generated
by a hurricane. Those spaces allow wind to flow through, rather than forming a solid barrier to
be battered by wind.
Gates
An open, flopping gate can be twisted and detached from its anchor and has the potential to
damage the fence. Gates should be closed and locked when a hurricane is in the forecast.

Is Pressure Washing a Good Way to Clean Fences?

Pressure washing makes cleaning fences easy. It’s an excellent solution for removing surface dirt and grime, as long as the fence isn’t too dirty or in ill repair. Pressure washing a fence that needs repairs can create further damage.

Settings

When using a pressure washer, a low to medium spray in a fan pattern is best. It will help avoid any potential damage and it will also aid in preventing streaking. The machines can be used on modern materials, along with wood.

There’s no need to blast the fence with all the power available. A psi of 1500 to 2000 is a good setting for fence washing, along with a 25-degree spray tip. Spring and autumn are good times to wash a fence and ready it for the next season.

Safety First

One of the most important things to remember when washing a fence is to ensure there are no people, pets or plants on the opposite side that will be harmed. For safety’s sake, clear loose debris from the fence and work area. Be sure to close any doors or windows to the home. Covering lawn furniture and yard toys is also a good idea.

Washing the Fence

Most individuals simply turn on the pressure washer and begin spraying down their fence. While that can work if the dirt and grime are very light, manufacturers recommend applying a cleansing agent formulated specifically for the fence type.

Work in small sections at a time and work from the bottom up. Applying a detergent to the entire fence before rinsing isn’t a good idea. The soap will dry, harden, and removing it is much more difficult. Let detergent set for 5 to 10 minutes before rinsing it off.

For tough dirt and stains that aren’t easily removed, use a rotating scrub brush on the end of the pressure sprayer wand. Individuals can then clean as usual, washing in small sections and rinsing before moving to the next area.

Advantages of Fence Panels

Fencing can be constructed board by board or with pre-made panels. Installing fencing panels reduces the time and work required to complete the task and provides individuals with an aesthetically pleasing fence.

Pre-made fence panels are easily obtained at big box stores, but a better option is to purchase them from a fencing company or lumber company. Some sawmills will also fabricate pre-made panels to an individual’s specifications. It’s a good option for those that want to customize their fence or incorporate some ornamentation.

Even though there are a limited range of variations in appearance in panels, even pre-made panels can add value and appeal to a home. It’s vastly easier to erect a fence with panels than individual boards. Panels are available in multiple heights and individuals can select from multiple types of wood species, though most are manufactured of pine or red cedar.

With pre-manufactured panels, individuals can get straight to the business of preparing the ground and digging the holes for the supports. Individuals won’t need many tools, either. Depending on the area to be fenced, the average person can complete the installation in a weekend or over the course of several weekends.

Disadvantages

For individuals that take a DIY approach, pre-made panels won’t allow for much in the way of a custom look or fit. It there are variations in the landscape such as dips or hills, panels don’t allow for customization to ensure that each panel is the same height.

When purchasing from big box stores, the panels are often joined using staples rather than nails. Those assembled with staples are weaker and more likely to develop problems.

Pre-made fencing panels can be heavy and unwieldy. Installing them can be difficult, particularly if an individual is attempting to perform the task alone. Plan on having at least one other person to help.

Is Fence Damage Covered by Homeowners Insurance?

Wind, fire, storms and vandals can damage fencing. Whether a homeowner’s policy will cover the cost to repair or replace fencing will depend on the policy and the cause of the damage. Homeowner’s insurance will typically pay for damages, provided it’s included in the policy’s list of covered causes.

Car Crashes and Vandalism

Vehicles running off the road and crashing into fences is far more common than people think. The driver of the vehicle that caused the damage is typically liable for the costs, but the homeowner’s policy will pay for the repairs or replacement. If the offending driver is known, insurance companies will often seek to recover their costs from the offending driver’s insurer. Insurers will also cover damage due to vandalism.

Fires and Storms

If the policy holder’s home, or the neighbor’s, catches on fire and damages the fence, the insurance company will cover the cost. The same is true if the damage is the result of high winds, a hurricane or a tornado. However, be aware that some policies do exclude damage from floods and winds in Florida.

Trees

There are multiple instances when trees can be the cause of damage to a fence. Homeowner’s insurance will pay for repairs or replacement if a limb comes down in a storm or the neighbor cuts a limb and it falls on the fence. However, the claim will be denied if the insurer believes the homeowner was negligent in some way or if the accident could have been prevented or avoided by the homeowner.

Exclusions

Insurance companies have an extensive list of exclusions that may be written into a homeowner’s policy. It’s critical for individuals to understand their coverage. The normal effects of aging or wear and tear on fences isn’t covered. Neither is damage due to termites and other insects, mold and fungi, dings and dents from lawnmowers, or children playing.

Damage sustained from vandalism or a vehicle accident should be reported to the police immediately and homeowners need to take photos of the damage. Both may be required by the insurance company to provide proof of the damage and its extent.

dog-proof fencing

Dog Proof Fencing: Things to Consider when Choosing a Fence

Pets are wholesome creatures in this world, as many consider them to have a significant role in one’s life. Pets such as dogs, cats or birds, etc. require their zone too where they can move freely apart from having their time with the owner.

For dogs, there is dog-proof fencing which gives access to them where they get a certain zone and they are not able to escape. As such creatures are free and they love to run whenever they get an opportunity to do it, dog-proof fencing fills the void gap of allowing the owner to be at peace rather than worrying about its dog pet.

Dos and Don’ts of Dog-proof fencing

There are certain aspects when it comes to selecting a fence. The following blog includes the dos and don’ts when choosing a dog-proof fence.

Fence’s material

The quality material of the fence matters a lot as it is the main lead when it comes to strength.

Don’ts: Choosing a low-quality material fence such as plastic which can be destroyed easily by the pet.

Dos: Choosing high-quality aluminum fences which can resist animals invading it or barreling into them.

As such creatures are full of energy and they are ready to run anywhere whenever they get the opportunity to leap, they never leave a chance to avail themselves of it.

Height of the fence

The height of a fence provides the maximum or minimum probability of crossing over it if one wants to cross the fence through illegal means.

Don’ts: Choosing a short heightened fence that can be crossed over by the pet easily.

Dos: Choosing such a fence following the pet’s height but taller than the pet.

Huskies can easily leap over a 4-foot-high fence. In such a case, at least 5 feet high fence is preferable.

Distinguishing the Boundary lines

Boundary lines are essential when it comes to installing fences and boundaries offer a great deal of representing fences whenever some matter occurs.

Don’ts: Installing the fence in a very compressed area where the dog is not being able to move.

Dos: Installing the fence following the property’s limit where the pet gets a wide range of areas where it can play with itself.

By doing such a thing, the dog can run as much as it wants and have its area at least where it can play.

Maintenance

It is a fact that everything you claim needs maintenance. Without maintenance, the quality of certain objects fades away.

Don’ts: Keeping the fence dirty and never analyzing or short-checking the fence once a month.

Dos: Keeping an eye on the fence once a week by observing its shortcomings or lacking and fulfilling the lacking’s gap.

Maintenance of fences can offer a great deal of more secureness and safety, especially for the pet living inside the fence. Not just to the settlement of the pet but also when it is playing inside the fence or if it tries to go out of the fence.

When is it Time to Replace Your Fence?

You may want to replace your fence for any number of reasons. You may simply want to update the appearance or it may not be functional for your current needs. However, there are signs that indicate your fence actually needs to be replaced and the signs are easy to spot, depending upon the material with which its constructed.

Cost

It can be more cost effective to replace an entire fence that’s been installed for several years rather than trying to hold it together any longer. You don’t want to invest any substantial amount of money into a fence that will only last a couple of more years before it must be replaced anyway.

Damage

Chipping, cracking and splitting – or missing boards of wooden fencing – is a sure sign the fence needs to be replaced. It’s an easy matter to replace a single board, but when entire sections are missing boards, it’s unsightly. Non-wooden fencing can experience damage in the form of chipping, cracking and splitting that’s unpleasant to view and comprises the integrity of the structure.

Leaning

A leaning fence is a sign that its lost structural strength. If a single section is leaning, it can often be repaired or replaced. If there’s a generalized leaning along the entire fence, it’s time to be replaced.

Loose & Missing Hardware

Fences use metal fasteners that can encompass nails to screws to hold all the pieces together. Over time, the hardware can rust or loosen due to wind, rain and salt spray. You have a choice of replacing the entire fence or making repairs, depending on the age of the fence. The fence may sustain further damage by trying to repair it.

Rotting

Rot is a common problem in areas of high humidity and rainfall. Florida residents have the additional concerns of hurricanes that result in storm surges and high winds that can exacerbate any existing problems. Signs of rot will appear on fencing where it’s closest to the ground and while preservatives can help, eventually a full-blown case of rot will set in.

5 Reasons Your Fence Gate Should have a Lock

Most homeowners know the value of including a gate in their fence installation, but many people overlook the benefits of a lock. They assume that the mere presence of a gate will deter untoward actions. Whether you choose a manually operated or convenient electronic option, every fence gate should have a lock.

  1. Safety

Your fence gate provides completion of a solid enclosure where children and pets can play in safety. Without a lock, anyone can enter the property at will by simply pushing open the gate. Children can do the same. Be sure to install locks above the reach of children and pets. Canines have been known to learn how to operate manual locks.

  1. Theft Protection

You may have expensive vehicles, outdoor furnishings, lawn equipment and other assets that you’ve worked hard to acquire. Without a gate lock, anyone from your neighbor to a thief can come in and make off with your valuables.

  1. Liability

If you’ve never discovered that someone has entered your property to enjoy the amenities, consider yourself lucky. There are an increasing number of people that pay no attention to boundaries. They think nothing of slipping onto your property to use your pool, spa, hot tub, or trampoline. In the course of their marauding, they can injure themselves on toys or tools left in the yard. Depending upon the exact circumstances, your homeowner’s insurance may not cover the costs of any damage or injuries an intruder sustains. You could be liable for the expenses.

  1. Insurance Requirements

You probably have items in your yard with the potential to cause an injury or that would be expensive to replace. Good examples are pools and spas and the chemicals to maintain them, treehouses, ziplines, swing sets, trampolines and even ordinary outdoor grills. Installing a strong gate lock can be a requirement of your homeowner’s policy.

  1. Deterrent

A fence will discourage most people from unauthorized entry, but others will assume you’re hiding something valuable. A securely locked fence gate is a powerful deterrent to would-be intruders. Few individuals will want to take the time to scale your fence if they can’t gain entry through the gate.

Modern Fencing Trend: Horizontal Fencing

For decades, the standard in fencing has primarily consisted of vertical pickets and uprights. It’s a tried-and-true design popularized by the white picket fence model depicted in films and TV. Fencing design professionals originally introduced the horizontal fence in the 1950s and 1960s.

After a substantial run of popularity, fencing again returned to the vertical model. Today, individuals are seeking ways to express a greater sense of style in their fencing. The result is that those that want something new and trendy have reimagined horizontal fencing in multiple ways.

Aside from the unique appearance of a horizontal fence, they’re also quicker to install and they’re often less expensive since less material is needed to achieve the same effect as a vertical fence. They typically buffer more street noise than vertical fencing and a horizontal fence tricks the eye into perceiving a larger area than there actually is, which is handy for anyone trying to sell their home.

There are no hard and fast rules for today’s horizontal design. Individuals can incorporate different types of materials in their fencing. People are combining alternating colors and planks of varying widths for visual interest. No one ever said fence planks have be perfectly aligned and many are opting for planks that are staggered and uneven.

There’s also no rule that says fencing has to be constructed of the same type of wood. Fashionable homeowners across the nation are designing fencing that utilizes planks of different wood types. Pine, cedar and redwood are the most popular material combinations.

Once widely used for furniture, bamboo is quickly becoming a preferred fencing material as it weathers well in outdoor environments. An additional benefit is that bamboo is a renewable and eco-friendly resource.

If none of those options are appealing, there’s also louvred models – an entirely new direction for fencing. The louvres can be adjusted – just like louvred windows – to allow for specific levels of privacy.

Does Fence Color Matter?

Faced with the extensive variety of colors available with modern fencing, many individuals throw up their hands in frustration – after all, it’s just fencing. However, the color of fencing is just as important as the type and style of fencing that’s chosen. When fencing is installed, it’s one of the first things that others will notice and they’ll form an opinion about the property, residents, and even the neighborhood based on its appearance.

Fencing is an extension of the home and while it needs to be complementary, it doesn’t necessarily have to be the same color. It’s a way to showcase your style, but the goal is to achieve a balanced appearance, while remaining within the parameters and reasons for installing the barrier.

It’s also a good idea to consider the colors of the plantings, lawn furniture, decks and other aspects of the yard when working toward a balanced perspective. Don’t forget to consult with the homeowner’s association (HOA) if there is one. There are typically stringent guidelines concerning fencing.

Make a Statement

For homes in shades of black, brown or grey, a contrasting color that adds a touch of color can be used to create a dramatic statement. Conversely, for homes with unique exteriors that demand attention on their own, a fence in white, neutral or subtle colors will complement the landscape without detracting from the colorful statement that is the house.

Shades of blue and gray siding can easily be paired with a white fence for preference. Homes that feature a textured exterior such as brick, stucco or stone look stunning when highlighted by a bronze or natural aluminum fence. If the home has shutters or trim of a specific color, matching the fence colors to those features is an easy way to bring together all of those elements and create an accent point.

Old or New

Take the age of the home into consideration when choosing fencing. Many of the modern colors and styles may not go well with a structure built in the 1950s. There are dozens of color selections that will complement newly constructed homes and those that are relatively new. It can be helpful for individuals to take a photo of their home to their fencing specialist.

SimTek Fencing Contractor

Why SimTek® Fencing is a Wise Choice in South Florida

With all the different types of fencing material available, it can be extremely difficult for home and business owners to decide what best meets their needs. It’s a common problem, as individuals try to balance their need for safety, privacy and materials that will withstand the severe weather conditions that often assail the South Florida landscape.

One very wise choice is SimTek® fencing that accommodates a wide variety of requirements. It’s a type of molded polyethylene that offers an extensive array of benefits that includes durability combined with a myriad of beautiful and realistic-looking surfaces that emulate stone and wood.

Hurricane Winds

South Florida is subject to storms with strong winds, the fiercest of which are hurricanes. SimTek® fencing is reinforced with galvanized steel making it able to withstand sustained hurricane winds of up to 110 mph and gusts up to 130 mph. It’s one of the only vinyl fencing materials that meet the Miami-Dade wind load requirements without any modification to its construction or installation.

Environmentally Friendly

SimTek® panels are constructed with recycled materials. When the fencing eventually reaches the end of its long lifespan, each of the panels can be recycled in its turn.

Sun and Surf

The UV rays of the sun are strong in South Florida and it can add environmental aging to most materials. SimTek® doesn’t have that problem. It’s unaffected by the harsh rays of the sun and won’t deteriorate. The same is true of the fencing for ocean salt spray, along with algae and most chemicals routinely used around home and businesses. It’s an ideal choice for any oceanside property. Alkaline and acidic soils have little effect on the fencing and owners don’t have to worry about termites and other insect pests.

High Durability

A SimTek® fence provides superior performance in a wide variety of climate conditions without fading and will stand up to impacts without taking damage. It won’t warp or crack.

Very Low Maintenance

SimTek® fencing is resistant to graffiti and it only takes a high-pressure rinse to remove marks. Dust just rinses off and there’s no other maintenance required. It never needs staining or painting.
