Modern Fencing Trend: Horizontal Fencing

For decades, the standard in fencing has primarily consisted of vertical pickets and uprights. It’s a tried-and-true design popularized by the white picket fence model depicted in films and TV. Fencing design professionals originally introduced the horizontal fence in the 1950s and 1960s.

After a substantial run of popularity, fencing again returned to the vertical model. Today, individuals are seeking ways to express a greater sense of style in their fencing. The result is that those that want something new and trendy have reimagined horizontal fencing in multiple ways.

Aside from the unique appearance of a horizontal fence, they’re also quicker to install and they’re often less expensive since less material is needed to achieve the same effect as a vertical fence. They typically buffer more street noise than vertical fencing and a horizontal fence tricks the eye into perceiving a larger area than there actually is, which is handy for anyone trying to sell their home.

There are no hard and fast rules for today’s horizontal design. Individuals can incorporate different types of materials in their fencing. People are combining alternating colors and planks of varying widths for visual interest. No one ever said fence planks have be perfectly aligned and many are opting for planks that are staggered and uneven.

There’s also no rule that says fencing has to be constructed of the same type of wood. Fashionable homeowners across the nation are designing fencing that utilizes planks of different wood types. Pine, cedar and redwood are the most popular material combinations.

Once widely used for furniture, bamboo is quickly becoming a preferred fencing material as it weathers well in outdoor environments. An additional benefit is that bamboo is a renewable and eco-friendly resource.

If none of those options are appealing, there’s also louvred models – an entirely new direction for fencing. The louvres can be adjusted – just like louvred windows – to allow for specific levels of privacy.

How to Choose your Fence Height

There’s no “right” fence height, but it’s important that you know why you’re installing a fence. Most people install a fence for safety, security or privacy. Others want to establish a boundary between their property and their neighbor. No matter the reason for the fence, there are some mitigating circumstances that can curtail the height of the fence you want.

Anyone that’s governed by a homeowner’s association (HOA) will need to check with the organization first. HOAs have very strict rules about the height, type and materials for fencing, if it’s allowed at all. The second obstacle could be local governmental regulations that limit the height of a fence and how it must be erected. For instance, stockade fencing must be installed with the “pretty” side out.

Boundaries

Fencing for boundary lines can range from 3 to 6 feet in height. Some homeowners choose to have a 3-ft. fence in front with a 6-ft. fence for the back of the property for added privacy. In many locales, your neighbor may have to approve the fence and its height prior to installation.

Privacy

If privacy is your primary goal, you’ll need a fence of at least 6-ft. in height. That height is sufficient to prevent passing strangers and nosy neighbors from peering in. For the ultimate in privacy, fences are available in heights of 7-8 ft. However, obtaining approval for a fence that tall may prove difficult.

Unwanted Intruders

A 6-ft. fence is typically tall enough to discourage most forms of wildlife. The exception to that would be deer that are capable of jumping an 8-ft. fence. Keeping humans out of your yard is a little more difficult. A 6-ft. fence will usually discourage a casual intruder, while a motivated burglar may not be so easily deterred even by an 8-ft. fence. For those instances, spikes and similar embellishments can be added to the top.

Kids and Pets

Anyone with children or pets know how quickly they can go over or under a barrier. Never underestimate a youngster’s ability to climb and crawl. To keep young children in, a 4-ft. fence will suffice, but to prevent contact with passersby, choose a 6-ft. fence. This is also true for canines – they can jump over, crawl under, slip between pickets, and even crawl up the fence if they can get a toe-hold. Make sure a self-locking secure gate is included in the design and specially designed barriers for small dogs and puppies.

Pools and Gardens

A 4-ft. fence is typically sufficient for gardens to keep out rabbits and other wildlife and regulations usually stipulate a 4-ft. fence for pools. Other safety measures will be mandated for pool fences and height from the ground.

5 Fence Etiquette Tips to Keep your Neighbors Happy

You may be proud of your new fence, but your neighbor may not share your enthusiasm. The fence you install may have ramifications for the neighbor(s) yards. A significant portion of the population display emotions ranging from puzzlement and indignation to outright anger over a fence. To head off potential disputes, you should observe proper fence etiquette.

Inform Your Neighbor

It’s just a common courtesy to have a friendly conversation with any neighbors that could be impacted and let them know what you want to do. Depending on local regulations, they may be financially responsible for a portion of the upkeep. If you have a homeowner’s association (HOA), never erect a fence unless you get approval in writing first.

Boundaries

Before erecting any type of fence, it’s critical that you know exactly where your property line is located. Impinging on your neighbor’s property by as little as an inch can mean you have to take down the fence and relocate it. It may be convenient to rely on the property’s plat map but to be absolutely positive of your boundaries, hire a surveyor that will place physical markers on the lines.

In or Out

Bear in mind that standard procedure is to install a fence with the finished or “pretty” side facing outward. If you want to view the same beauty of the fence on the inside as the rest of the world sees, consider a double-sided fence.

Maintenance

Few things are as distasteful to look at as a fence that’s fallen into disrepair. Fences that are sagging, leaning, have fallen prey to insects, or needs painting or staining is unpleasant and lowers home values. If you don’t have time to perform the proper maintenance, there are a variety of fencing material options that are almost completely maintenance-free and will even withstand hurricane force winds.

Fencing Contractors

The happiness and satisfaction you have in your new fence will depend largely on the experience, reliability and professionalism of your contractor. Compare installers and choose with care.

Does Fence Color Matter?

Faced with the extensive variety of colors available with modern fencing, many individuals throw up their hands in frustration – after all, it’s just fencing. However, the color of fencing is just as important as the type and style of fencing that’s chosen. When fencing is installed, it’s one of the first things that others will notice and they’ll form an opinion about the property, residents, and even the neighborhood based on its appearance.

Fencing is an extension of the home and while it needs to be complementary, it doesn’t necessarily have to be the same color. It’s a way to showcase your style, but the goal is to achieve a balanced appearance, while remaining within the parameters and reasons for installing the barrier.

It’s also a good idea to consider the colors of the plantings, lawn furniture, decks and other aspects of the yard when working toward a balanced perspective. Don’t forget to consult with the homeowner’s association (HOA) if there is one. There are typically stringent guidelines concerning fencing.

Make a Statement

For homes in shades of black, brown or grey, a contrasting color that adds a touch of color can be used to create a dramatic statement. Conversely, for homes with unique exteriors that demand attention on their own, a fence in white, neutral or subtle colors will complement the landscape without detracting from the colorful statement that is the house.

Shades of blue and gray siding can easily be paired with a white fence for preference. Homes that feature a textured exterior such as brick, stucco or stone look stunning when highlighted by a bronze or natural aluminum fence. If the home has shutters or trim of a specific color, matching the fence colors to those features is an easy way to bring together all of those elements and create an accent point.

Old or New

Take the age of the home into consideration when choosing fencing. Many of the modern colors and styles may not go well with a structure built in the 1950s. There are dozens of color selections that will complement newly constructed homes and those that are relatively new. It can be helpful for individuals to take a photo of their home to their fencing specialist.

Does Soil Matter for Fence Installation?

Individuals have so many options to think about and consider when they decide to install a fence – and soil type typically isn’t one of them. The truth is that the type of soil will have a definite impact on the installation process of any fence. It’s just one of the many reasons that professional fence installers typically like to perform an on-site examination of the area to be fenced.

Florida has many different types of soil and they can vary significantly over relatively small areas. Professional fencers typically set fence posts in concrete, but it’s important for individuals to understand the soils involved and how it will impact the cost and time it will take to erect the fence.

Clay

Soil comprised of clay is often likened to concrete when its dry. Clay soils are dense, difficult to work with, but tend to hold fence posts solidly in place. It may need to be moistened to make it malleable to digging. The problem with clay is that it tends to shrink when it dries out and that can affect the appearance of the fence.

Sand

A soil with a high concentration of sand is far from ideal for installing a fence. The only real solution for erecting a fence in sandy soil is to embed fence posts in concrete.

Rock and Gravel

A certain amount of rocks and gravel in the soil can aid in providing stability to a fence. However, it’s a soil type that adds an extra level of difficulty when digging fence post holes, even for powered post hole diggers.

Silt

This soil type is very easy to work with for installation. However, it can cause substantial problems when it becomes saturated after heavy rains. Silt can take on a more fluid consistency that doesn’t bode well for fence stability.

Peat

Individuals that have peaty soil or reside near areas that tend to be wet or damp may experience a lot of difficulty when installing a fence. The soil provides little support and even concrete footings for fence posts may not be sufficient.

The Long-Lasting Aluminum Fence

There are a lot of myths and misconceptions about aluminum fences, much of which is based on outdated information and a lack of understanding of modern manufacturing methods. It offers strength, security and durability while providing a look of traditional elegance. Aluminum has many qualities to recommend it far beyond its durability and beauty.

Rust

One of the most attractive elements of aluminum fencing is its ability to stand up to rust and corrosion. Some research estimates that the longevity of aluminum can be up to 10,000 years before it would begin to break down and disintegrate. It also tolerates UV rays without fading.

Rot and Insects

Aluminum fencing isn’t subject to rot and that’s a definite plus in Florida’s humid weather and an environment that can see significant rainfall. The material is also highly unappealing to insect pests. Insects can infiltrate other types of materials and play a significant role in rot.

Low Maintenance

Owners of an aluminum fence won’t have to spend time staining or painting it to keep it looking attractive. A powder coating can be applied that will last for years to keep it looking good without any special maintenance requirements.

Easy Replacement

If a section of aluminum fencing becomes damaged under any unforeseen circumstance, it can be easily replaced in the same style and color.

Environmentally Friendly

Aluminum fencing is a popular choice for those that want an eco-friendly solution. The material is 100 percent recyclable.

Customizable and Versatile

Modern aluminum fencing can be customized in a myriad of stylings, including the spacing of the pickets and the top of the upright components. It can be installed in multiple ways to accommodate an extensive array of environmental aesthetics.

Cost and Security

Aluminum is far less expensive than wrought iron, while providing many of the same properties. It provides an enhanced level of safety for children, pets and property.

Chain Link Fence is Great for Pet Enclosures

The installation of chain link fencing is the preferred method of corralling rambunctious canines whether it’s in the back yard or at the local dog park. There are multiple benefits to chain link fencing for pet enclosures that aren’t available with other options.

Safety

The pattern in chain link fencing provides pet parents with safety and security for their dog. Available in multiple heights, it’s a deterrent to canines that try to jump and can be installed with preventative measures for those that try to burrow. It’s effective for keeping out unwanted wildlife. Fencing can be installed with child-proof latches and self-closing springs for another level of safety.

Puppies like to explore and a very real danger is that a puppy will try to climb between the rails of traditional fencing and get stuck or actually make it through to the other side. The same is true of smaller dogs. Chain link fencing has a close-knit pattern too small for puppies or small dogs to wiggle through.

Cost

Expense is a major consideration for homeowners or communities that want to create a dog park for residents. Chain link fencing is highly cost-effective. A vinyl coating can be applied in multiple colors to coordinate with surroundings and it’s an easy matter to attach relevant signage for the public spaces to make individuals aware of pertinent rules.

Durability

The average chain link fence will last up to 15 years and choosing a smaller gauge wire can increase the strength. It’s also quick and easy for professional installers to erect, meaning the amenity can be offered to residents in fairly little time or homeowners can allow their canines to begin exploring their own backyard unfettered.

Easy Maintenance

Chain link fencing requires very little in the way of maintenance. If a section of fencing becomes damaged, it’s a simple matter to repair it or to replace the damaged portion.

Many Styles of Wooden Fencing

Wood remains a favorite fencing material for many people and it’s available in a myriad of styles to beautify properties, accommodate a variety of specific purposes, and meet personal preferences. The following are some of the most popular styles, in no particular order.

Board-On-Board

A board-on-board fence resembles a picket fence on a grander scale. Large upright pickets are attached to horizontal rails. It doesn’t offer as much privacy since each board doesn’t touch and there are small gaps between them. An advantage to this type of fence is that the design enables air to flow through to cool the environment and they hold up well in strong winds for the same reason. The term board-on-board is often used to describe a shadow box type fence, but there are differences.

Estate

This is the type of fence seen pictured in thoroughbred horse farms. The design is simple, easy to see through and decorative, though the primary function is to keep horses and other prize livestock in. It’s also called post and rail.

Picket

Picket fences are no longer the bland white barriers of the past depicted in TV and film. They’re available in different colors and styles. They can be installed with scalloped tops, a myriad of rail sizes, and multiple types of points/decorative elements on top.

Shadow Box

This type of fence utilizes a design in which individual boards are attached vertically to horizontal rails. The upright boards are placed in a manner in which they alternate, one on each side of the rail, that results in a quasi-overlapping pattern. It’s not a solid fence but does afford a level of privacy and neighbors can’t see through unless they’re peering at an oblique angle. The term board-on-board is often used interchangeably with shadow box fences, but they’re different.

Split Rail

Originally developed as a basic way to corral livestock, the design has become a popular fencing option in a number of environments. The fence is erected by threading rails through holes in upright posts. It’s sometimes referred to as ranch-type fencing and typically installed as a decorative feature rather than functional.

Stockade

Primarily designed for privacy, they’re often used to surround backyard pools to meet safety standards. The fencing features a solid barrier of boards placed tightly against one another so others can’t see through. The boards are typically pre-assembled in panels that are installed rather than placing each individual board. The fencing isn’t as attractive from the inside as the outside, but it is effective for creating secure yards for children and pets to play.

Ornamental Fencing to Enhance Beauty

Individuals seeking to enhance the beauty of their home through the use of fencing have several choices, each with its own set of advantages. There are several things to consider when selecting fencing material. Homeowners will need to decide, beginning with much they want to spend on their fence and the type of material they prefer. It’s always best to consult with a fencing professional before making any definitive decisions.

Aluminum

Available in multiple styles, colors and designs, aluminum fencing brings an elegant and sophisticated look to any property. It’s equally stylish around homes, commercial properties, city parks, schools, and industrial complexes. It’s versatile, won’t rust, and can be topped with spikes for an extra layer of security. Aluminum is low maintenance and it’s a standout in the beauty category with all the stateliness of wrought iron.

PVC

The material is offered in an extensive range of sizes, colors, styles and patterns from which to choose. PVC enhances the beauty of properties, can be installed with a variety of decorative tops, and retains its beauty against UV rays and all types of weather. It also withstands severe winds, is relatively maintenance-free, and won’t rot, peel, chip or splinter. It’s unattractive to insect pests.

SimTek®

Through a special manufacturing technique, SimTek® fencing can be made to emulate the appearance and texture of wood and high-end stone. It’s tough enough to withstand hurricane-strength winds and won’t degrade under UV rays, ocean surf or biologicals such as algae. It’s not attractive to insect pests and is an excellent sound buffer.

Wood

Fencing made of different types of wood are available and the cost will partly depend on the type of wood that’s selected. It’s offered in multiple styles that can enhance the value and beauty of homes while providing an additional level of safety. However, it does have some disadvantages. It may need to be painted or stained and it can fall prey to termites and other insects.
