Why Fence Maintenance is Important

Fences beautify and protect, but no matter how maintenance-free a fencing material may be, it will still require some type of regular maintenance. The type of fencing material an individual has will dictate the amount of upkeep it will require and should be explored before opting for a specific material.

No matter what type of fencing an individual selects, there will be certain maintenance tasks that need to be completed, even if it’s only a weekly inspection of the hardware used to make connections. Other types of material will simply need to be washed down with a hose or pressure washer. Individuals should assess the time, effort and expense they’re willing to expend before they buy.

Wood

Fences constructed of wood will weather and become old-looking. They’ll need to be painted or stained – and applying a primer is recommended before painting. Depending on weather conditions, they may need attention every year to keep them looking good.

Wood fencing is also prone to depredations by insects and an application of an insecticide may be required to surroundings. Wood absorbs moisture, making it susceptible to cracking, rot, mold and mildew. The hardware used to join fencing will also need to be checked regularly to ensure it isn’t rusted or pulled out of the wood.

PVC/Vinyl

Five times stronger than wood, PVC/vinyl fencing requires little in the way of maintenance, withstands strong winds, and adverse weather conditions. It’s earned the Dade County Product Approval Certification and only needs to be washed down with a high-pressure hose.

Aluminum

Aluminum is typically treated with a powder coating for protection against oxidation and rust. It doesn’t require painting or staining. It will need to be wiped down periodically to remove dirt and debris.

SimTek®

The material requires the least amount of maintenance of any fencing on the market. The most it needs is a power washing to keep it looking attractive and to remove everything from dirt to graffiti.

Best Fences for the Most Privacy

In a busy world where privacy is at a premium, many people are choosing to install fencing to obtain a bit of privacy from neighbors and the outside world. It’s important to understand that there are a variety of materials that can be utilized to create a privacy fence.

In many instances, the term “privacy fence” simply refers to the ability to see through the fence or over it. Privacy fencing typically has solid panels or boards that are placed close enough together that people can’t see between them. Panels or board aren’t limited to vertical installation. They can be erected in stylish, decorative, horizontal designs.

Most people immediately envision an imposing iron or aluminum fence when they think about their privacy needs. There are multiple decorative fencing materials that can be utilized to create an oasis of privacy, safe away from prying eyes to enjoy time with family and friends.

Wood

Stockade fencing consists of boards that can be placed so closely together that no one can see in. Boards can also be placed in an off-set, alternating pattern that blocks straight-on views. Some wood fencing can be customized in various ways. The disadvantage is that the “pretty” side of the fencing will be facing outward and the view from inside isn’t as appealing.

It’s efficient, but will require a considerable amount of maintenance as wood attracts insects and absorbs water, increasing the risk for rot, mold, mildew, and splitting. Painting or staining is required to keep it looking good and not weathered. Even pressure treated lumber will eventually experience problems.

PVC/Vinyl

The solid panels require little in the way of maintenance other than an occasional pressure wash. It’s available in a wide range of colors, basic PVC styles, and numerous customization options are available for a personal touch. It won’t need staining, painting, and the solid panels last for many years.

SimTek®

The modern material can be crafted to emulate the look of stone or wood and it’s almost maintenance free. The solid panels only require a rinse with a hose or a power washer. SimTek® can be customized in a variety of ways and it’s as appealing on the inside as the exterior.

The fencing is equally attractive for home and business use.

Cost

Installing a fence can be expensive. The good news is that PVC fencing is one of the most affordable options on the market and less expensive than wood or iron.

How to Correctly Measure for a Fence

Before calling in the professionals to install a fence, individuals should actually do some measuring on their own. It will help in budgeting for the project and facilitate communications with the fencing professional about what’s wanted. A fencing specialist will still make an on-site visit to view the area to determine if there are any extenuating circumstances such as thin soil, slopes, property curves, obstacles, or utility lines that must be considered.

Property Lines

It’s critical to identify exactly where the property lines are located. Without knowing where property lines are, the fence could inadvertently end up on the neighbor’s property. If that happens, it will need to be moved and a neighbor could even initiate a lawsuit if they want to be unpleasant.

Some municipalities allow fences to be erected on the property line, while others require it to be set a specific distance away from the property line. Let neighbors know about the fence, as they may be partially responsible for its upkeep, depending on local regulations.

Measuring

Measure the perimeter of the property in feet and mark each corner of the property with a stake. Individuals will need someone to help them since the tape measure will need to be taut when measuring. For individuals that decide to install the fence themselves, they’ll need to run a taut string around the perimeter to help ensure the fence line is erected in a straight line. Mark where any gates will go how wide they will be.

Professional Expertise

Fencing panels typically come in 6 or 8-foot panels so it can be helpful to divide the total perimeter footage by the size of the panel. However, there will also be posts to consider and there’s no way of knowing the space they’ll require until the type of fencing is selected. It’s just one of the ways in which the expertise and knowledge of a professional fencer is invaluable.

How Long Should a New Fence Last?

The lifespan of a fence will vary according to the construction material, the amount of regular maintenance that has been performed, and prevailing weather and climate conditions. South Florida is well-known for its abundant sunshine and humid conditions, both of which will affect the fence longevity.

Aluminum

The material doesn’t rust and is unattractive to insects. It can be customized in multiple ways and fashioned in the appearance of wrought iron. The metal isn’t vulnerable to rust, corrosion, fading or the effects of rain. It requires little maintenance, doesn’t require staining or painting, and its recyclable. Aluminum fencing can last up to 50 years.

PVC-Vinyl

PVC-vinyl fencing does well in any climate, doesn’t require painting, is 5 times stronger than wood, and its recyclable. A quick hose down with a pressure washer will keep it looking like new and it’s unattractive to insects. It’s resistant to fading and weathering. A PVC-vinyl fence will last an average of 35-40 years.

Wood

Weather, insects, rot and mold are the primary problems associated with wood fences, even though its typically pressure treated to minimize those concerns. It can be painted or stained against damage by water and humidity, but will still require frequent inspections to ensure that connecting hardware is tight and intact. Wood has the potential to warp, crack and split. If properly maintained each year, a wooden fence can last up to 20 years.

Chain Link

Quick to install and more affordable than other options, chain link fencing is less susceptible to wind damage since air flows through it with minimal restriction. Galvanized chain-link will eventually rust, but vinyl-coated chain link will resist rust for many years. The average lifespan of a vinyl-coated chain link fence is 25-30 years.

SimTek®

The unique material is resistant to fading from UV rays, shrinking and warping from shifting temperatures, and offers soundproofing benefits. It’s unattractive to pests and doesn’t require painting or staining. It can withstand sustained winds of 110 mph and gusts of up to 130 mph. Mold, mildew and grass stains can be easily removed with a pressure washer. The material is recyclable. SimTek® fencing can last for up to 50 years.

fence gate

What to Consider Before Installing a Gate

A gate can be the crowning touch for your fence. A sturdy gate can deter intruders, burglars, keep children and pets in, while preventing unwanted people and wildlife from entering. Installing a gate isn’t a simple matter of creating a barrier. There are multiple concerns that individuals should consider before a gate is installed.

Permits and Regulations

Many cities and municipalities require a permit to install a gate on an already existing fence. The installation of a gate is typically covered under a permit to erect a new fence. Consulting with a fencing professional is critical as they will be cognizant of local regulations. Some communities also have height limits on gates.

Width

The width of the gate will be a critical consideration. Gates wide enough to fit most passenger cars and trucks won’t be sufficient for larger model vehicles. The width may not accommodate delivery vehicles, many types of trailers, or even some types of equipment for lawn care or home renovations.

The space for the gate will need to be slightly larger than the driveway entrance. Additionally, the wider the gate span is, the more likely it will be to eventually sag. Heavy-duty hinges and some type of bracing – either decorative or utilitarian – will be needed for single swinging gates.

Single, Double or Sliding

Individuals have the option of a single gate hinged on one side or a gate with two panels, both of which swing open and closed independent of the other. A sliding gate is an excellent solution for smaller entrances – as long as there’s sufficient space for the door to slide back with no impediments such as trees, flowerbeds or decorative hard features.

Latches, Locks and Automation

For those with young children and large dogs, it’s essential that latches, locks and opening mechanisms be above their reach. It’s especially important if automated gates are installed or if individuals live near busy highways.

Equally important, the mechanisms should also be out of reach and inaccessible from people on the outside of the gate. Access control can be incorporated to screen individuals through video intercoms before they enter the property for an additional level of safety and security.

Best Plants to Enhance Your Fence Line

Gardening enthusiasts often practice their skills and enhance their fence line with plants. It’s an especially popular option where space is at a premium. The trick to this type of fence enhancement is choosing vines and shrubs for vertical gardening that are easily contained. There are numerous options that won’t litter the lawn, requires little care, and emit an enticing aroma.

Clematis

One of the most popular vines is the clematis, known as the “Queen of Climbers.” They’re easy to grow, available in a multitude of colors and color combinations, and have large, showy blossoms. They’re not recommended for growing around children and pets as they’re mildly toxic if ingested.

Morning Glory

Fast growing climbers, they have attractive heart-shaped leaves and a wealth of colors is available. Blooms open in the morning and last for several hours. One variety – moon flower – blossoms at night. They like full sun, but may need some protection from hot afternoon sun in South Florida. They easily self-sow and are highly attractive to bees, butterflies and hummingbirds.

Honeysuckle

The honeysuckle produces fragrant flowers from summer through autumn followed by red berries. The easy-to-grow climber can overwhelm a fence if flowered stems aren’t cut back by a third in late summer. Hummingbirds like them.

Ivy

There’s an ivy to accommodate any preference and there are very few places where ivy won’t thrive. Be sure and choose the climbing variety and not the creeping type. Keeping it contained is a simple matter of cutting it back.

Hydrangeas

These bushes can grow up to 15 ft. in height and have a stylish appearance with clusters of pom-pom type blossoms. They like moist and well-drained soil. Colors encompass hues of pink and red to blue, lavender, white and green. Acidic soils are best for blue varieties, alkaline soils for pinks and reds.

Reasons to Fence Your Yard in South Florida

There are multiple reasons that you might decide to install a fence and you’ll have a myriad of styles, colors and materials from which to choose. The first step before contacting a fencing specialist is to identify why you want a fence.

Safety and Security

A fence provides safety for children and pets, protecting them from incursions by human trespassers and a wide variety of unwanted wildlife. Fencing is effective for concealing valuables encompassing lawn care equipment, ATVs, PWCs and motorcycles from burglars.

Privacy

Homes are being constructed even closer together than in the past, inhibiting the ability to enjoy time with family and friends. A fence provides a private space for you to enjoy good times away from the prying eyes of neighbors and passersby.

Set Boundaries

Fencing is a great way to establish property boundaries, but it’s always best to consult with your neighbor first. Depending on local laws, they may be responsible for part of the upkeep costs – an expense for which they might object.

Ornamentation and Curb Appeal

If you’re planning on selling your home, a fence can add significant curb appeal and ornamentation all in a single package. Fences are an attractive attribute for buyers and viewed as a money-saving bonus.

Hiding Eyesores

Everyone partakes of modern conveniences, but those services often come with equipment that’s unappealing to the eye. A fence can hide or camouflage eyesores that include satellite dishes, HVAC units, emergency generators, and electrical boxes. They’re also effective for concealing electrical vehicle charging stations and trash bins.

Complying with HOAs

HOAs can dictate many things and a common rule is keeping “clutter” such as children’s toys and outdoor furniture out of sight. A fence alleviates that concern, but always consult with the HOA to ensure the fence you want conforms to the organization’s guidelines.

Swimming Pools

Pools and spas must be surrounded with an appropriate fence and gate to prevent access by children. Before installing a pool or spa, consult with a fencing specialist to determine what meets safety standards and your aesthetic preferences.

restore fence

Can you Restore a Rusty Fence?

The good news for owners of steel or wrought iron fencing that’s become rusty and unsightly is that the fence can be restored. It will require preparation, primer and elbow grease – or an electric tool to make the job easier and faster. Never attempt to simply paint over a metal fence. The results will look terrible and the paint will flake.

Metal fencing is typically treated with a specialized coating to prevent rusting, but even the best professionally-installed fence has a finite lifespan. If you have an aluminum fence, you won’t see it rust, but it will corrode over time. Metal fencing in South Florida is required to withstand stresses that other locations don’t, primary of which is salt from ocean spray and being drenched in ocean water during hurricanes.

Fence Restoration

Restoring your fence if it’s showing signs of rust will aid in prolonging its longevity and maintaining it’s beauty and effectiveness. You can prep the fence and do the work yourself, but it can be a time-consuming task, depending on the method you choose. The alternative is to hire a company that has the tools, technology and experience to do the work.

Before undertaking the project yourself, perform an inspection of the fence to determine the extent of the damage. The fence may simply be showing surface rust and can be restored. If the rust is extensive and has penetrated the surface, it may be a better idea to replace rather than restore.

If you’re performing the work yourself, it’s essential that you remove as much rust as possible. You can remove it manually using a sandblaster, grinder or a liquid rust remover. All the methods are effective, it just depends on how much time you want to invest.

When the fence is free of rust, all that’s left to do is apply a coat of primer and a new coat of anti-rust paint in the color of your choice. You can use a roller paintbrush to apply the primer and paint.

Florida Fence Laws When You Have a Pool

Every family waits with eager anticipation the installation of their new pool. However, before taking the first dip in your new pool, there are fencing laws to which you must adhere under the Residential Swimming Pool Safety Act. Failure to do so has stiff penalties.

Enacted in 2009, the law is designed to reduce the number of accidental drowning of children. Prior to passage of the law, drowning was the No. 1 cause of accidental death in children of all ages. Now pool owners are required by law to erect a barrier around their pool that adheres to stringent specifications.

Swimming Pools

Outdoor swimming pools are required to be encircled by a fence or other suitable barrier of at least 4 feet in height. It must be low enough to the ground so children can’t crawl under it and include no outcroppings that small children can use to crawl over it.

The fence is required to be a specified distance from the edge of the pool in the event that a child manages to infiltrate the barrier to prevent them from immediately falling in the water. The fence must have a gate that opens outward, be self-closing, and be equipped with a self-locking device.

Indoor Pools

There are some exceptions for indoor pools. If the pool is inside a screened in area, a fence isn’t required as long as the windows and doors that give access to the pool have a wired safety alarm. A fence also isn’t required if there’s a self-closing, self-latching device installed at least 54 inches above ground level.

Kiddie Pools

Small, shallow wading pools are popular for younger children at home. They’re designed to be temporary in nature and aren’t subject to fencing laws. Private community pools and public pools located in condos and apartment complexes are also exempt from the fencing law, but also have more rigorous laws to ensure the safety of children around water. Public swimming pools must be in compliance with the Virginia Graeme Baker Federal Pool and Sap Safety Act.
