 How Strong is That Hurricane?

If your residential fences or commercial fences were reduced to a pile of splintered lumber by Hurricane Irma, it’s important to understand how the strength of hurricanes is measured, the rating scale and what it can mean to you before the next hurricane strikes.

According to Wikipedia, the Saffir–Simpson hurricane wind scale (SSHWS), formerly the Saffir–Simpson hurricane scale (SSHS), classifies hurricanes – Western Hemisphere tropical cyclones that exceed the intensities of tropical depressions and tropical storms – into five categories distinguished by the intensities of their sustained winds. Officially, the Saffir–Simpson hurricane wind scale is used only to describe hurricanes forming in the Atlantic Ocean and northern Pacific Ocean east of the International Date Line. Other areas use different scales to label these storms, which are called “cyclones” or “typhoons”, depending on the area.

The levels of the Saffir Simpson Scale include:

Category 1 – Very dangerous winds will produce some damage

Category 2 –  Extremely dangerous winds will cause extensive damage

Category 3 – Devastating damage will occur

Category 4 – Catastrophic damage will occur

Category 5 – Cataclysmic damage will occur

The classifications can provide some indication of the potential damage and flooding a hurricane will cause upon landfall.

To be classified as a hurricane, a tropical cyclone must have maximum sustained winds of at least 74 mph (Category 1). The highest classification in the scale, Category 5, contains storms with sustained winds exceeding 156 mph.

According to the The Weather Channel, the recent Hurricane Irma remained a Category 5 storm for 45 hours – a record amount of time.

With hurricane season in effect through November 1 and Hurricane Irma till so fresh in our minds, this is the perfect time to contact Zepco Fence for repair or replacement of your commercial fences or residential fences.  Whether you’re looking for a modern wooden fence, PVC fences, or a variety of other materials and styles, Zepco Fence is the best possible choice for your fencing needs.
