Famous Fences

A fence figures largely in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, Mark Twain’s classic tale about a young boy growing up along the Mississippi River. The story, written in 1876, is set in St. Petersburg, a fictional town based on Hannibal, Missouri, where Twain lived.

Tom Sawyer lives with his Aunt Polly and his half-brother.  In this excerpt from Tom Sawyer, Chapter Two, provided by PBS, Tom decides to skip school in favoring of going swimming.  He’s caught out and, for punishment, he’s been told he must whitewash the fence the next day.

Saturday morning was come, and all the summer world was bright and fresh, and brimming with life. There was a song in every heart; and if the heart was young the music issued at the lips. There was cheer in every face and a spring in every step. The locust-trees were in bloom and the fragrance of the blossoms filled the air. Cardiff Hill, beyond the village and above it, was green with vegetation and it lay just far enough away to seem a Delectable Land, dreamy, reposeful, and inviting.

Tom appeared on the sidewalk with a bucket of whitewash and a long-handled brush. He surveyed the fence, and all gladness left him and a deep melancholy settled down upon his spirit. Thirty yards of board fence nine feet high. Life to him seemed hollow, and existence but a burden. Sighing, he dipped his brush and passed it along the topmost plank; repeated the operation; did it again; compared the insignificant whitewashed streak with the far-reaching continent of unwhitewashed fence, and sat down on a tree-box discouraged.

Tom gets to thinking and, figuring that it doesn’t matter who does the work, as long as it gets done, he convinces his friends that painting the fence is actually a privilege.  Not only that, it’s a privilege that they must pay for.

If you have a fence in Parkland, FL – the home of Zepco Fences – or anywhere in Miami-Dade, Broward or Palm Beach Counties, you won’t have to rely on Tom’s strategy.  From wooden fences in Fort Lauderdale and aluminum residential fences in Delray Beach to pool fences in Parkland and from fence springs to aluminum fences for Florida residents, Zepco Fences will be there for you.
